Our Thoughts
“ …Barn conversions make wonderful homes. This beautifully adapted old hay barn has such a “wow” factor that even myself and my colleague {both seasoned Estate Agents} said the “w” word as we entered it’s stunning interior. From the moment you step inside and see the generosity and quality of the kitchen you will start to see what we mean. When you continue the tour of it’s unusual accommodation you will be enthralled by this unique “feel” and size of the place. In estate agents terms it is a four bedroom, three bathroom luxury detached house with fitted kitchen and galleried landing which is currently used as a study. In the grounds lie what looks like an enormous double garage but is, in fact, a very well equipped leisure / games room that doubles as a private “pub”. The garden boasts a fully heated and well used swimming pool and I understand from our vendor that this is used throughout the year. So, whether you are a professional person looking for a prestigious property in a rural idyll or a family looking for a lovely home in the country you should seriously consider Church House Barn.
Location
This barn originated in medieval times as part of Church Farm. When landed gentry owned hundreds [if not thousands] of acres they generally split the land into several farms. This practice gave rise to many farm names that still exist today … Home Farm the one nearest the main house; Apple Ridge Farm the one on the orchard hill, and, like this one, Church Farm the one with the Church next to it. St Nicholas’s Church, a close neighbour, dates back to Saxon Times {before 1066} and the Farm would have been developed at that time or thereabouts.
Hardwicke, whose name derives from the old English “heorde wic” or heard keeping settlement is a beautiful “English” hamlet; it has thatched cottages and, within the parish, fine pubs. It will surprise no one that farming is still the major industry of the parish. The area was once renowned for its cider and cheese, which may have led to its being unscathed during the battle for Gloucester in the Civil War - perhaps neither side wanted to endanger a source of much appreciated sustenance!
Amongst other buildings in the neighbourhood is Madam's End Farm. Local lore has it that this name derives from the time when Henry VIII, en route to Gloucester, reached the farm. His then queen, Anne Boleyn, tired and refusing to face the necessary ceremonies involved in entering the city itself, ended the day's progress and spent the night there.
I give you all these historic and rural notes to demonstrate that Hardwicke is seriously country but … and it is an important but … Church House Barn lies just 2 km [1¼ miles] from junction 12 of the M5. This will see you into Aztech West, North Bristol, in 20 minutes [the Mall, Cribbs Causeway 2 minutes later] and central Gloucester in 10 Minutes. So, even with the social demands made by a busy family you have cinema, restaurants and sports facilities including dry skiing within a few minutes drive.
