Our Thoughts

“…The Georgian period of architecture has always appealed to me personally. It could be the well thought out internal proportions or it may be the attention to detail in the elevations but, for whatever reasons, this delightful town house has that certain “je ne sais quoi” that, although difficult to isolate, will be experienced by all who visit. Houses also have “characters” and, after a couple of hundred years, this one certainly has a wonderful feeling to it; from the moment I stepped over the threshold I was enveloped in a tranquillity seldom experienced in modern houses, a feeling that lasted the whole time I was [or have been] inside. Features within the house are too numerous to list but, if I were to name just a few of my favourites they would have to include the beautiful cast iron and tiled fireplace in the front room; the lovely garden room giving on to the cottage garden; the faux windows at the front and the amazing “nautical bathroom” with its fully functional “porthole”. These houses also offer versatility and many neighbours have taken a stairway into the roof [up through the airing cupboard] and created additional bedrooms on the second floor. Berkeley is one of those towns that never cease to amaze. The Berkeley family continue to live in the Castle which has been occupied by the family for over 900 years; it may interest readers to know that the family used to own all the land between “Berkeley Square” in London and Berkeley Castle on the banks of the Severn and this vast tract of land was once all known as Berkshire. Sir Edward Jenner lived and developed the life saving vaccination for Smallpox in Berkeley and, much more importantly to me, as a member of the Pearce family, is the fact that the last recorded Court Jester of England, one “Dickey Pearce” died and is buried in the Castle cemetery. You might have guessed by now that I love this house and I urge you to view it before my lottery ticket wins the jackpot after which, I promise you, it will be too late…”
